Grade ten students have studied World War One as part of the I&S unit War, Weimar and Bauhaus. Students researched conditions on different fronts in the First World War. We also discussed the role of women and civilians during the war. Based on their own research and models of original letters from the Great War, grade ten students then wrote letters from the front to loved ones. They also wrote replies from the home front that outlined conditions at home. Students also censored the letters as letters of this kind were usually censored by the authorities during war time. The final collection of letters was tied into a booklet that is now available at the school library. Both the original and censored versions of the letters were included in the collection. Our school librarian also created an electronic flip book of the letters. The flip book version is available online for future student use.

The War, Weimar and Bauhaus unit also focused on the impact of war in Germany. Students have learned about the Paris Peace Conference, the creation of the League of Nations and the problems of the Weimar Republic as part of this unit.  Student posters on important personalities of the Weimar era were displayed recently in the MYP Evening that book place in November.  As part of this unit, we have explored art and literature of the era and made connections between political developments and artistic and literary movements. Students have also learned about various political ideologies and different election systems.

Students will continue to learn more about politics and world affairs during the rest of the school year.  Topics to be covered this year in grade ten include, among other things, the Second World War and the Cold War.
